Fall 2011

_______________________________________________

Dear Friends,

I hope you have been enjoying the warm summer days, and finding many opportunities for creative inspiration. Have you taken the time to sit quietly and observe “Mother Nature’s” marvelous palette, her wondrous sense of design, utilizing an infinite amount of colours shapes, lines and textures?

As artists we really are blessed to be able to see in a unique way and perceive the world around us with a special appreciation.

I want to give you an update of all the exciting things I have been involved with since the last newsletter, and to notify you about upcoming classes and workshops for the fall.

I am also including some of the scenes of inspiration that I have come across so far this summer. What joy!!!

TEACHING NEWS

This summer I taught two courses at The Haliburton School of the Arts. My usual Collage and Acrylic Explorations and a new course, Acrylic, Collage and Yoga, which I am very excited about.

In this class I started off with a demonstration, then facilitated an hour of Gentle Kripalu Yoga, including a meditation exercise related to the painting assignment for the day. This was followed by free painting time and we ended the day with some stretching, restorative yoga and relaxation.

I found this process enabled the students to relax, calm their minds, centre themselves, and to enter deeply into their own creative process. They produced very exciting, personal works of art and the yoga at the end of the day seemed to restore their energy and reduce body aches usually accompanying many hours of standing and painting.

My hope is to include yoga and meditation into more of my classes.

Please contact me if you have interest in experiencing this and organizing a workshop. (Click here for more information on yoga and painting workshops)

Once again my classes were filled with  wonderful, enthusiastic, inspiring participants and we had fun and shared so many things from discussions on creativity, to an abundance of intriguing “stuff” that could be used as collage. (Never throw anything out; it may be a wonderful addition to your collage work.)

The Haliburton School of the Arts is a wonderful facility, offering all kinds of interesting creative courses in all the arts. It is a hive of creative energy for six weeks during the summer. Everyone who attends finds the courses and environment fun-filled and stimulating. www.HaliburtonSchoolofTheArts.ca

TRAVEL NEWS

At the beginning of August I went on an amazing  road trip, including a visit to "The Kripalu Centre for Yoga and Health", in the Berkshires, Massachusetts, then onto Cape Cod, and then finally Lubec, Maine, near the New Brunswick Border.

It was all very wonderful, and inspiring.

I loved the Kripalu Centre, where I participated in lots of yoga, meditation, interesting workshops, yoga dance, hiking, biking and amazing nourishing food and  met so many like minded,  creative people. As the USA’s largest and most established center for yoga and holistic living, The Kripalu Centre has been providing people tools for optimal living for more than 30 years. Every visit immerses you in an experiential curriculum designed to bring vitality to your life from the inside out. If you are looking for a place where you can  relax, retreat, and renew yourself, I suggest you have a look at the website and programs offered. www.kripalu.org

In October/November I will be travelling to India, visiting many of the Buddhist Sacred Sites in North Central India. This is part of my life goal to visit and paint as many of the Sacred Sites of the world as possible. I have been inspired  by photographer Courtney Milne who has spent years travelling the globe in a personal quest to discover sites that have held mystical and sacred importance for humanity from antiquity to the present day. He has published a beautiful book filled with his powerful images and his response to these places. “The Sacred Earth”

I look forward to sharing my experiences in another newsletter.

ART SHOWS

You can have a look at my first YouTube interview, filmed at my show at the Art Provo Gallery, in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, in March 2011.

Art Provo - Interview with Jill Segal

Did you have the chance to see the exciting show at the Art Gallery of Ontario Abstract Expressionist New York? It was on until September 4th, I hope you got the chance to see it.

Drawn entirely from the Museum of Modern Art’s definitive collection, Abstract Expressionist New York featured more than 100 key works from Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Lee Krasner and others.

Jackson Pollack

The exhibition celebrates the monumental achievements of a generation of artists who catapulted New York to the centre of the international art world in the 1950s and left as their legacy some of the 20th century’s greatest masterpieces. Read more about it

I found it so exciting to see these paintings in their large original form. I have seen pictures of them in books which don’t really do them justice.
