PAINTING AND YOGA
Besides Art, Yoga and Meditation have also been my passions for many years and I have been using my Yoga and Meditation as vehicles for entering and deepening my creative process. I shared this in an informal way with my students and saw the many benefits that they experienced. In 2008, I decided to do the Kripalu Yoga Teacher’s Training Program to deepen my practice and to be able to share my knowledge in a more formal way with others.
Yoga means union or yoking of body, mind and spirit. It is a philosophy of life which creates harmony between body, mind and spirit. Kripalu Yoga, in particular, is a proven way to bring us back to that wholeness. It is “a gentle yoga of compassion” that encourages
self acceptance, non-judgment and learning to love and nurture our body.
Kripalu is a complete system of Yoga, with emphasis on breath (pranayama), postures (asana), meditation, and relaxation. The practice of postures offers relief for physical ailments and connects us to our bodies (moving out of our heads and listening to our bodies).
Breathing exercises and relaxation relieve emotional stress and meditation creates a moment of peace, a break from mind chatter, allowing us to be fully in the moment and connecting with something higher than ourselves as well as our authentic, intuitive selves.)
I have found that when I allow myself to connect with my body, calm my mind, and centre myself, creativity flows and I am able to tap into a universal creative source. Time seems to stand still and often the painting seems to paint itself. This process for many people can be a healing and transformative experience.
This summer I facilitated a new program at The Haliburton School of the Arts called Acrylic, Collage and Yoga, which I am very excited about. The process of combining painting with yoga and meditation enables one to relax, calm the mind, centre oneself, and to enter deeply into one’s own creative process.
The students produced very exciting, personal works of art and the yoga at the end of the day seemed to restore their energy
and reduce body aches usually accompanying many hours of standing and painting.
My hope is to include yoga and meditation into more of my classes.
Please contact me if you have interest in experiencing painting and yoga, organizing a workshop or would like to find out more about this.
Small yoga classes and individual yoga instruction are also available.
